About This Site

Travel Gear List publishes hands-on reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on travel gear for small dogs: airline carriers, car booster seats, seat belt tethers, portable water bottles and travel beds. Everything here is written for owners of dogs under about 20 pounds who would rather bring their dog along than leave them behind.

Small Dog Travel Safety

The information on this site is general and comes from personal experience. It is not veterinary advice. Talk to your veterinarian before traveling with a dog that is very young, elderly, pregnant or has a health condition, and before giving any calming product.

Never leave a dog alone in a parked car. Interior temperatures can climb to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows cracked or on a mild day. Keep dogs out of the front seat, where a deploying airbag can seriously injure them. Attach any tether or seat belt to a well-fitted harness, never to a collar, and keep it short enough that the dog cannot fall off the seat or reach the floor.

There is no single governing crash-test standard for pet car seats, boosters or seat belts, so do not assume any product will protect a dog in a collision. Secure carriers, bowls and loose gear so they do not become projectiles in a sudden stop. Take regular breaks on long drives and offer water often.

Airlines set their own rules for pets in the cabin, including carrier dimensions, weight limits, fees and health paperwork. Those rules change and vary by aircraft, so confirm them with your airline before you book. Always check that a product fits your own dog and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
